Choosing a dog or cat bed, harness and toys
How to choose the right size pet bed, measure your dog for a step-in harness, and pick chew toys that last, with tips for puppies, older pets and small breeds.
The right bed and harness make a big difference to a pet's comfort. A few measurements before you buy save a return.
Pet beds: measure while they sleep
Measure your pet from nose to tail while they're curled up, then add 10 to 20cm. Dogs that stretch out need a bigger, flatter bed, such as the large Big Paw bed. Curlers and cats love a cosy bed with raised sides or a tent, such as the pet tent bed. Older dogs with stiff joints do best with a thick, cushioned base that's low enough to step into.
Harnesses: go by weight and chest size
A step-in harness is easier to put on than an over-the-head one and spreads pressure across the chest rather than the neck. Check the weight range on each size: the XS harness fits dogs from 2 to 4kg and the S harness fits 4 to 8kg. You should be able to slide two fingers under the straps. Reflective strips help on dark winter walks.
Chew toys that last
Wood and rope chews give strong chewers something safe to work on. Pick a toy bigger than your dog's mouth, check it regularly for wear, and take it away once it starts to break up. The coffee wood tug toy is a good all-rounder.
Keep it clean
Wash removable covers every week or two, shake out the bed in between, and wash it more often if your pet has allergies.
